ASUU, ASUP, COEASU, Strike Is Over –Minister Of Education

The Minister of Education, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau has said the issue of strike in nigeria educational sector is over.

He said his mandate as minister has been fulfilled having resolved succeeded in ending the strike in July, saying that the resolution of the then prolonged ASUU,ASUP and COEASU strike less than 24 hours on assumption of office was a clear pointer to his commitment to fulfill that mandate.

Addressing newsmen in Lagos during an Impact Assessment Tour of Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria, he explained that the tour became necessary as parts of efforts to gain first hand information on the challenges facing federal government owned institutions, saying working with pictures and documents in modern day Nigeria could be deceptive.

He added that parts of the measure to nip strikes in the bud was his commitment to ensure the dignity of teaching service in Nigeria through adequate welfare packages, training and retraining of teachers at all levels.

He said government would continue to give priority attention to provision of conducive teaching and learning environment, among others in line with the transformation agenda of the federal government and President Goodluck Jonathan.

The Minister, who was in Lagos on the second leg of his assessment tour of institution, called on the Akoka main campus of the University of Lagos, inspected series of projects including the ongoing Jubilee Arcade located beside the waterfront.

He also revealed that the major challenges facing the education system has been the non-implementation of the several white paper proposals submitted to successive government administrations by many visitation panels to many of the institutions.

The University of Lagos Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Rahaman Bello, said the university has been at the mercy of the internally-generated revenues, support from philanthropists and contributions from the alumni members, saying out of about N400 million needed for monthly overhead cost, the university receives only N11.3 million. “In fact, the 2015 budget has further reduced it to about N10 million.”

At the Federal College of Education, Technical, Akoka, the Minister pledged to resolve the perennial land tussle between the college and UNILAG, saying it was a family affair that would be addressed in due course.

At the college, Shekarau commissioned two major projects of the link bridge to the disputed land funded by the Africa Development Bank, and the TETfund three-storey lecture theatre. He commended the college management for what he described as the decorum and discipline associated with education schools.

“As a teacher who is proud of this job, I appreciate the system here and I hope others can cultivate this,” Shekarau said.

Also at the Yaba College of Technology, where the Chairman of the institution’s Governing Council, Chief Ebenezer Babatope, commended the Minister for restoring hope the education system especially with his prompt resolution of the ASUP/COEASU strike.

AAUA Graduates 6, 341, 26 Bag First Class

Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Ondo State, Nigeria, will graduate 6, 341 at the 5th Convocation Ceremony of the institution which will hold on Thursday 6th and Friday 7th, November, 2014. Of this number, 26 graduands will receive First Class Degrees.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Femi Mimiko, gave the revelation on Tuesday last week during the Press Conference kick-starting the Convocation Ceremony.

Prof. Mimiko said, “A total of 6,341 graduands from the 2011/2012 and 2012/2013 sets will be convocating this year. Faculty of Science with 1,519 has the largest chunk, followed by Social and Management Sciences, Arts, Education and Law in that order. There are 412 graduands receiving postgraduate degrees, 10 of whom are in the PhD category.

“Of the two sets, 26 graduated in First Class; 1,414 in Second Class Upper Division; 3,505 in Second Class Lower Division; 993 in Third Class. ”

The VC said the 5th Convocation Ceremony was unique in the sense that it coincided with the University’s Founder’s Day of 15th year Anniversary, saying, “This is not a coincidence but fallout of a deliberate initiative to institutionalize the university and put it on a competitive pedestal and it is my hope that this profound tradition of scholarship shall be sustained here.”

Prof. Mimiko said AAUA would continue to strengthen the integrity and quality of its academic programmes through training and retraining of its staff and re-inventing and re-engineering of its programmes and emplacement of a broadening research agenda, with a view to churning out globally competitive graduates.

The VC highlighted some of the recent academic and infrastructure landmarks of the university.

He said, “Early this year, the United States Transparency International Standard, USTIS, after its 2013 school ranking survey, proclaimed AAUA the Best State University in Nigeria. A graduate of AAUA, Opeyemi Akeem Longe, who made First Class in Law, the first in the University’s 15-year history, did not only repeat the feat at this year’s Final Bar Examination of the Nigerian Law School, he is indeed the best result nationally!”

On infrastructural development, he said, “The Visitor to the university, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, inaugurated six projects during the last convocation ceremony on Friday, March 22, 2013. Between that time and now, the University has added at least seven other major projects to further tackle the challenge of space… There is the 30-Classroom Quadrangle; the 500-capacity Nelson Mandela Hall, the Central Research Laboratory Building, the Health Centre Building, and the Eastern Campus Gate. Above all, there is the iconic Senate Building, which is unarguably the most compelling, the biggest and most modern University Senate building in Nigeria.”
He thanked the Ondo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, for demonstrating genuine interest in ensuring delivery of quality education in the State.

Meanwhile, the Special Keep-Fit exercise for the Convocation Ceremony was held on Friday last week. The exercise started with a walk from the University Multipurpose Hall to the ultra-modern Gymnasium of the University.

Speaking after Keep-Fit exercise, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Mimiko, reiterated his delight at the sustenance of the weekly exercise and at making it a regular feature of the University’s Convocation.

He thanked the Sports Unit for managing and utilizing the Gym well. He stressed the need for members of the University Community to visit the magnificent Gymnasium at least once in a week to keep fit.

He noted when the accreditation team of the National Universities Commission visited the Gym, members of the team said the AAUA Gym was second to none in all Nigerian universities.

The VC announced that funds would be approved for the purchase of more sports equipment and thanked every member of the University Community for contributing to the project of building a new AAUA. He enjoined the students to continue to sustain the stable academic calendar, protect and project the image of their university.

Other events lined up for the Convocation Ceremony are the Opening of Exhibition (Scientific and Artistic) is built for Monday, November 3, in the Students\' Relaxation Centre at 10:00a.m.

BSc & HND Dichotomy: Court Hearing Commenced Today

The suit filed by holders of Higher National Diploma over what they described as discrimination commenced today.

The appellants; Garba Bello, Babatunde Samuel, Jubril Kadiri, Christiana Owolabi, Chuba Umechukwu and Fatima Ahmed on behalf of members of the association want the court to make an order directing the defendants to implement the federal government White Paper abolishing the dichotomy between HND and their B.Sc counterparts and consolidating emoluments in the public sector.

It would be recalled that the Federal Government earlier set up a committee to work on the dichotomy between holders of the Higher National Diploma (HND) and university degree holders.

The report has since been submitted to the Federal Government.

Words Of Advice For The Newly Admitted Students

I need you to understand that all am about to tell
you here are what we have seen and what still happens, so read to the end.

For the admitted ones the questions on their minds are; when is school resuming? Should we start coming to school? When is clearance starting? Should we start paying for school fees and so on? Those are right questions but Beyond these, there are certain valuable things you also need to know.

First of all, big congratulations for having made it
and congratulations in advance to those yet to be
admitted. It's not easy.

Do not feel you are better than those who couldn't make it or will not make it, rather; give God all the praises because its not as if you read or prepared more than they did, its not as if you did more or took more risks than they did, you all read, prepared, did equal expenses and took same risks but God has favoured you and said this is your time.

I want you to understand that gaining admission into
university is NOT the time for you to start planning
to exhibit all those your bad potentials you are not
allowed to exhibit at home, wearing sexy and
seductive clothes which you are not allowed to
wear at home (girls), carrying irresponsible hair
styles which you are not allowed to carry at home
(Guys).

It's NOT the time for you to start making plans on how to visit those men/guys you have been longing to visit or the time to start inviting girls to come visit you, its NOT the time to start going for party, its NOT the time to lose your virginity,
school, its NOT the time to get yourself "belonged" or start being arrogant, naughty, etc.

Gaining admission into university is the time to feel
"FOCUSED", its the time to feel "CHALLANGED", its
the time to feel "AT RISK", its the time to feel
"RESPONSIBLE", its the time to be "CAREFUL",
humble and know that 80% of the decisions about
your destiny now lies in your hands and any wrong
decision you make at this stage will definitely
reflect on your academics/future tomorrow.

For you to be that great person you have always wished or desired to be starts right now as a fresher, for you
to make your first class, second class upper/lower,
third class, etc all starts as a fresher, for you to
graduate or not graduate with your mates starts as
a fresher.

A lot of good and bad things are waiting for you
inside that campus.

Some will tell you that you need to belong to cult to
make it, they will tell you that the former head of
state, Governor, senator were all there because
they were cultists.

What they won't tell you is about many who died in the process.

Some will tell you that you need to become "GAY"..
(a lesbian or a homo-intimateist) to avoid distraction,
diseases and unwanted pregnant, what about the
curses that are attached to it?

Some will tell you that you need a company and
someone to date or always be with to know whats
up around the school or to get academic aid or to
avoid being lonely...they are all lies.

There are harmless friends, there are fellowships, there are reading groups, there are good clubs to be your company, academic aid and so on.

University is a dangerous place because your
parents are not there to direct you or make
decisions for you, your room-mates or your school
friends can't do that for you; they have not even
finished deciding rightly for themselves let alone
deciding for you.

All the decisions are on you to make. Nobody will ask you to read, nobody will ask you to come to class on time, nobody will force you to do your assignment or quiz. If you are not a decisive type, kindly start learning it now or better still, do not come to university to destroy your future or life. University is a very sweet place and also a very ugly place, it can shape you into a great person, it can also reshape or destroy you.

We have tried to provide you with info on how to enter
university, we wont tell you how you will live your
life there. Be Careful_And_Wise.
